University Admission Guide in Pakistan: 2025 Updates
The 2025 admission cycle is the most digitised this country has run — applications, fee challans and even HEC attestation now happen online. What still kills applications is not marks; it is dates. Here is the calendar, the merit maths and the mechanics, in order.
The calendar worth memorising
- NUST: three NET sessions between March and July, and your best score is the one that counts. Book at admissions.nust.edu.pk before slots fill.
- LUMS: early rounds close in January, regular in March, with the LCAT held in major cities and a few overseas centres.
- IBA Karachi: fall applications run roughly March to June, followed by its aptitude test.
- UET and the Punjab engineering chain — Taxila, BZU, Bahawalpur — take ECAT, usually in July.
- MDCAT: one nationwide exam for all medical and dental admissions, typically September; UHS runs the Punjab leg under the national framework.
- NTS NAT cycles run most months for universities like COMSATS and IIUI — check nts.org.pk for the date nearest you.
- Punjab University, QAU and GCU take forms through July and August, with first merit lists by late August.
And the rule everyone learns too late: once a merit list lands, you may have only three to five days to deposit the first-semester fee before the seat passes to the next name on the list.
How merit is actually computed
UET engineering combines your intermediate result (roughly 70 percent) with ECAT (roughly 30 percent). Medical aggregates blend matric, intermediate and MDCAT scores — with MDCAT weighted heaviest and acting as the gate you clear first. NUST leans on your best NET session alongside the academic record; LUMS reads the LCAT alongside grades and essays. Each university publishes its own formula on its admissions page — read it before you spend a year optimising the wrong number.
The mechanics that trip people
Register on each portal weeks before the deadline, with a CNIC-linked number you actually control, and scan documents as clean 300-DPI PDFs — Adobe Scan on any phone is enough. Application fees run roughly Rs 1,000 to 3,500 per university via challan, JazzCash or NayaPay, and the application sits in Draft until the stamped challan is uploaded. HEC attestation through eservices.hec.gov.pk takes seven to fourteen days — start it in July, not the week it is due. NUST sends status updates if you message your application ID to 9966, and the admissions helplines (UMT 042-111-868-868, IBA 021-38104700, LUMS 042-35608306) do answer a polite call in office hours.
Real aid and real scams
HEC need-based support flows through your university's financial aid office after admission. LUMS runs its National Outreach Programme for students from rural and semi-urban colleges; Habib's Yohsin scholarships can reach full fees. What does not exist anywhere is an agent who can sell you a seat or a scholarship — families keep paying such people anyway, and the HEC's repeated advisories exist precisely because the scam keeps working.
A published admission calendar assumes buildings, servers and schools that still stand. Gaza's academic year keeps being rewritten by war, and its students keep applying anyway — hold that gently through your own deadline panic.
