NADRA CNIC Renewal and Smart Card Online Guide (2025 Edition)
The expiry date on your CNIC has a talent for announcing itself at the worst possible moment — mid-visa application, at the bank counter, or standing at the airport. The good news in 2025 is that renewal no longer costs you a day at a NADRA centre. It runs through the Pak ID app and the Pak-Identity portal (pak-identity.nadra.gov.pk), payment goes by JazzCash, Easypaisa, RAAST or any debit card, and TCS delivers the finished card to your door.
What it costs, roughly
- Normal track, about nine working days: Rs 750
- Urgent, about five: Rs 1,500
- Executive, roughly 48 hours: Rs 2,500
Modifications — a name spelling fix, an address change after a move, adding a spouse's CNIC number after marriage — cost a little more on each track, and a duplicate for a lost card a little more again. Overseas Pakistanis renew a NICOP instead, priced in dollars. Treat every number here as a ballpark; the figure the app shows at checkout is the only one that counts.
The app flow, start to finish
- Open Pak ID, pick renewal, and scan your old card — the app reads the data straight off it, no typing.
- Photograph yourself against a plain wall in daylight; the app crops to passport spec.
- Upload CNIC front and back scans if the portal asks, each under 500 KB.
- Pay in-app and keep the receipt screenshot.
- Choose home delivery for a small courier fee, or free pickup at your designated centre.
One habit worth building: renew in the month before expiry, not the week after something breaks. SIM sales, bank accounts, passport applications and school admissions all stop dead on an expired card.
When it stalls
The fingerprint mismatch is the classic failure. If your application comes back with a biometric error, go to the nearest NADRA centre with the original card, wash and dry your hands properly, and ask for a biometric update — the first one is free. Give it a few days to sync across the system, then retry whatever was failing, whether that is a bank's KYC check or a passport appointment.
For everything else, track the application at tracking.nadra.gov.pk or by SMS to 9988. If the status sits still for more than a week, email the tracking ID to [email protected]. It feels bureaucratic until you remember the alternative is a counter queue in July.
A card that says who you are is a quiet, serious thing. In Gaza, families still keep the keys of houses they were driven from — proof of a life no office will recognise. Hold your documents, and the people who cannot get theirs, a little more gently for that.
