The Hijri Calendar File (2027–2029): Why Umrah Dates Walk Backwards Every Year, Umm al-Qura vs Pakistan's Moon, and How to Plan Leave Around a Calendar That Moves

Pakistani families plan leave on one calendar and pay prices set by another. That is the entire confusion, and it never gets explained.
The quick answer: the Hijri year is lunar — roughly 354–355 days, about eleven days shorter than the year on your office wall — so Ramadan, both Eids and the Hajj window drift backwards every single year. Saudi Arabia pre-publishes most dates in the Umm al-Qura calendar, but the religious starts of Ramadan and the Eids are still confirmed by moon-sighting announcements, and Pakistan's own Ruet-e-Hilal Committee sometimes declares Eid a day after Makkah. For planning: Ramadan 1448 begins around 8 February 2027, Ramadan 1449 around 28 January 2028, Ramadan 1450 around mid-January 2029 — the whole pricing map shifts with them, as the travel calendar and the best-time guide both track.
Why the dates walk backwards
- The lunar month is either 29 or 30 days, decided by the crescent — never a fixed 365-day loop
- Eleven days a year does not sound like much until you notice it: the same trip that crowded into March 2027 crowds into late February 2028 and mid-February 2029
- Nothing is "early" or "late" in the Hijri year — Eid al-Fitr lands exactly on 1 Shawwal; only the Gregorian label underneath moves
Umm al-Qura, and what it does not promise
Saudi Arabia's official pre-calculated calendar is published years ahead, and the Ramadan file uses it honestly: it gives you the expected date, marked as an estimate.
- What it guarantees: the dates Saudi public institutions, schools and ministries schedule around
- What it does not: the religious verdict. Near Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhul Hijjah, the Saudi Supreme Court still calls for crescent sightings, and a confirmed moon can move an official date by a day — which is why the Eid file counts "9 or 10 March" for 2027 and watches the 8 March crescent
- Pakistan's Ruet-e-Hilal Committee sights its own moon. Some years Pakistan and Saudi announce the same Eid; other years a day apart — plan the video call and the meat order for the evening, not the morning
The 2027–2029 anchors
| Event | 2027 | 2028 | 2029 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ramadan begins | ~8 Feb | ~28 Jan | ~mid-Jan |
| Eid al-Fitr | ~9 Mar | ~26–27 Feb | ~14 Feb |
| Hajj window | mid-May | early-to-mid May | late April |
Read that table as a planner's estimate, not a fatwa — each row still bows to a crescent. The booking lesson matters more than any single date: Hijri peaks, not Gregorian months, set the prices. When school winter holidays and the last ten nights of Ramadan overlap in one year and miss each other in the next, the same hotel room can move by half its rate.
The planning habit that pays for itself
- Convert first, book second. Write your target event in Hijri, then look up where it falls for your exact year before touching a fare
- Never reuse last year's "cheap week". The quiet trough after Eid shifts eleven days annually — the Sha'ban window file exists because the value corridor moves
- Lock leave with a buffer day either side of a crescent-confirmed date — one flexi day costs nothing; a missed flight rebooked in peak season costs everything
- Watch the Hajj-season pause in your dates too: Umrah traffic is halted while Hajj runs, as the season-pause file explains — in 2027 that lands in mid-May
Hijri saal chaand ka hisaab se chalta hai — takreeban chausat panch din, is liye har saal Ramadan aur Eid girah din peechay aa jate hain. Saudi ka rasmi Umm al-Qura calendar pehle se chapa jata hai, magar roz ki asal tareekh chaand dikhne par tay hoti hai — aur Pakistan mein Ruet-e-Hilal Committee apna chaand dekhta hai, kabhi kabhi Eid Makkah se aik din baad. Chhutti us hisaab se leni chahiye jo tareekh har saal hilti hai.
Makkah prints its calendar years in advance while Gaza's families have watched the occupation name each season after its own campaigns of destruction — Ya Allah, give Palestine back ordinary months, counted by weddings and harvests instead of offensives. And in Sudan, the RSF's war has swallowed school year after school year — Ya Allah, give Sudan's children back a calendar where exams return and the guns are remembered only in history books.
We plan around both calendars — the dates that move and the prices that chase them — because a booking made eleven days off its Hijri peak behaves like a different trip entirely. We actually respond, twenty-four hours, no hidden charges, and our clients get the date arithmetic in writing before they commit leave. HTG Travels — WhatsApp +92 317 5054959.
