The Schengen Cascade File (2026-2027): How a Pakistani Passport Climbs From Single-Entry to the 1-Year, 2-Year and 5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa — the Lawful-Use Ladder, the €90 Fee, the 90-in-180 Ceiling That Never Rises, and the EES Records That Now Prove You Earned It

"Pehli baar single, doosri baar multi?" — the Schengen theory every Pakistani family half-remembers from a cousin's experience. The boring truth: it is a written ladder, and the rungs are published.
The quick answer: the EU visa code rewards lawfully used visas with longer ones: three short-stay visas obtained and lawfully used within the previous two years earn a one-year multiple-entry visa; a lawfully used one-year visa earns two years; a lawfully used two-year visa earns five. The fee stays €90 for adults (children six to under twelve pay €45, under-sixes free). Pakistani applicants file under this standard ladder at every Schengen desk in Pakistan — the faster adapted ladders announced for certain other nationalities do not apply here. And two ceilings never move: validity is not stay — still ninety days in any hundred and eighty — and the border officer still decides entry. Ladder history par chalti hai, kismat par nahi.
The ladder, rung by rung
- The first rung — three lawful visas inside two years. Three short-stay visas obtained and lawfully used within the previous two years entitle you to a one-year multiple-entry visa. "Lawfully used" is the whole exam: entered and exited inside validity, the 90/180 limit respected, no rule broken.
- The second rung — the one-year visa used well. A lawfully used one-year multi-entry visa earns the two-year one.
- The third rung — five years. A lawfully used two-year visa earns the five-year one.
- What never counts. Airport transit visas and limited-territorial-validity visas do not enter the ladder at all — a family whose only Schengen history is a transit stamp through Frankfurt is climbing from zero, as the transit visa rules file explains.
- Passport arithmetic. Where the passport's validity runs short, the visa is issued to end three months before the passport does — the passport renewal file settles that order before the application wastes a rung.
What EES changed in April 2026
- The Entry/Exit System replaced passport stamping with machine records across the Schengen area — your lawful use is now counted by a database, not argued from fading ink, and the overstayer flags himself.
- The practical habit: carry your old passports to every appointment anyway — desks still read pages while systems sync.
Where Pakistani families file — and win
- The desk follows the trip, not the rumours. File at your main destination or first entry — the France, Italy, Switzerland, Nordic and small-state desks all run the same code and cascade.
- The ladder's honest version is the travel-history ladder. Used-and-returned trips change how every file is read — the travel history file builds the pattern the cascade later pays out.
- A refusal is not a burnt rung. A refused application does not reset lawful-use history; what resets files is overstay and misuse. The refusal playbook handles the recovery.
- ETIAS does not replace any of this — Schengen visa holders stay outside that system; the ETIAS briefing is for the visa-free side of the family.
The misuse that burns the ladder
- The five-year visa is not a residence permit. Back-to-back eighty-nine-day stays "maximising" the sticker are the fastest way to watch a border officer cancel it — and record why; the 90-in-180 arithmetic applies to every entry, and the EES counts even when you do not.
- Keep the purpose real. Family, business, a recurring fair or conference — the cover letter that explains a recurring reason is the document the five-year rung quietly depends on; an employment letter showing continuity does the rest.
We ask our embassies for five years of validity while Gaza's families ask for one day of open crossing — eleven years of displacement, homes they still hold keys to and cannot walk to, aid that waits outside walls. In Sudan the war has burned whole address books: families scattered across three countries, each border asking a different question, each answer costing another month. Ya Allah, restore to both peoples the dignity of a door that opens on their own documents, and make our own ninety days gratitude instead of complaint.
We actually respond, twenty-four hours, no hidden charges — and our clients' Schengen history is assembled trip by trip, dates logged, documents filed, because the five-year visa is earned in the years before you ever apply for it. HTG Travels — WhatsApp +92 317 5054959.
