Saudi Iqama Guide 2026–2027: the Five-Year Muqeem Card, Renewal Fees, Exit Re-Entry and Final Exit
The work visa gets you to the airport; the Iqama is everything after it. Your bank account, your SIM, your family's visas, your right to leave for Eid and come back — all of it hangs on one card and its dates. Yet most Pakistani workers land in Riyadh or Jeddah knowing the work-visa process by heart and the residency system not at all. Ye guide wo gap bharti hai.
The quick answer: your employer must issue the Iqama within 90 days of your arrival — the entry medical and insurance registration come first, then the card within 5–10 working days, with employers now facing SAR 500 fines for delays. Since 2026 the Iqama is issued as the new five-year Muqeem resident card — a multi-year physical ID that replaced the old yearly card, though your fees and contract still renew on their own clock. Renewal costs SAR 650 a year in the private sector plus a dependent levy of SAR 100–200 a month per family member by salary bracket. Leaving temporarily needs an exit re-entry visa — SAR 200 single (up to two months) or SAR 500 multiple (up to three months), with extensions repriced in July 2025 to SAR 200 and SAR 400 a month. Leaving permanently needs a final exit — free, but only while your Iqama is valid. Late renewal draws a SAR 500 fine the first time, more the second.
The sequence from arrival
| Step | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Employer | Entry medical + insurance registration in the first days |
| 2 | Employer | Iqama issued via Absher/Muqeem — within the 90-day window |
| 3 | You | Activate Absher and Qiwa; check the card's data for errors — a misspelled name or wrong profession code costs months to fix, which is why the Gulf desk at HTG Travels checks new cards against passports in the first week |
| 4 | Yearly | Employer renews Iqama and work permit; levies paid |
| 5 | Any exit | Exit re-entry or final exit — before expiry, always |
The money, in riyals
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Iqama renewal (private sector) | SAR 650 / year |
| Dependent levy | SAR 100–200 / month each, by salary bracket |
| Exit re-entry, single (≤2 months) | SAR 200 |
| Exit re-entry, multiple (≤3 months) | SAR 500 |
| Extending exit re-entry | SAR 200 / month single, SAR 400 / month multiple (since July 2025) |
| Final exit visa | Free — while the Iqama is valid |
| Late Iqama renewal | SAR 500 first delay, doubling with a week's delay; SAR 1,000 the second time |
Two details cost people real money. Exit re-entry fees are non-refundable — cancel the trip and the riyals stay gone, a rule Saudi authorities restated in 2025. And the re-entry window is unforgiving: return after it lapses and the Iqama can be voided, turning a delayed Eid into a permanent exit. Iqama ka hisaab pehle, ticket ka baad — ulta karne wale airport par rote hain.
Final exit, done right
The final exit visa is issued by the employer through Absher once your contract ends and all dues are settled — end-of-service benefits, any loans, dependent fees. The trap is timing: request it before the Iqama expires, or a free process becomes a penalty case, and overstaying after a final exit invites fines and re-entry bans. Never book the one-way ticket before the visa is actually issued. Families flying home often carry a sealed Zamzam can — the Zamzam rules guide covers the one-can-per-passport airport purchase — and inter-city moves ride the Haramain trains.
Dependents and newborns
Every dependent on your file carries the monthly levy, and a baby born in the Kingdom needs the sequence done promptly — hospital birth certificate, Pakistani passport via the embassy, then the dependent Iqama — before fines begin to run. Sponsoring visiting parents is a different route entirely: the family visit visa guide explains the MOFA invitation and the SAR 300/500 fees. Pre-departure workers should read the Saudi work visa guide first, and the UAE employment guide compares the Gulf's other big system.
The Gulf desk at HTG Travels keeps a written expiry calendar for every Saudi client — Iqama, exit re-entry, insurance, dependent levies — and messages before dates, not after: the boring difference between a smooth file and a lost weekend at Jawazat, with the 24-hour replies this trade rarely offers.
A residency card is a privilege Palestinians know only from the wrong side — IDs confiscated, addresses erased, family unification denied for generations under Israeli military rule while settlers receive permits in months. May Palestine's people hold papers no occupier can cancel. And exit visas and final exits are words Sudan's exiles understand too intimately — waiting out the war between Cairo and Port Sudan, saving phone-call minutes like currency, burying the plan to return in a drawer with the deeds. May Sudan's homecomings be final in the good direction — toward home, rebuilt.
