The Pakistan Departure File (2026–2027): What Actually Happens at Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Sialkot Airports — Check-In, FIA Immigration, the Currency Counter and the Night Before

File #827 · 4 min read
Umrah guides start at Jeddah arrivals because the Saudi side is dramatic. But the first authority on your journey is Pakistani — and the families who get stopped get stopped at home, at counters their agents never mentioned.
The quick answer: arrive three to four hours early — Umrah groups need the top of that band; run the sequence — airline check-in, FIA immigration, customs-currency, security, gate; keep passport, visa printout, return ticket and hotel booking in one reachable folder; stay inside the SBP cash limit — USD 5,000 equivalent per adult visit, USD 2,500 per minor; and treat the night-before audit as the real departure, because airports punish surprises.
The night before, not the morning of
The entry-refusal file audits the Saudi end; the Pakistani end deserves the same hour: passport valid six months beyond travel, visa printout legible, tickets and hotel confirmations printed, the documents folder from the packing list packed where hands can reach it, phone charged. First-time flyers will find the general documents-and-airport walk in the first-international-flight guide; this file adds the Umrah-specific counters.
Check-in: scale, stamp, seat
- The airline counter weighs bags against the allowance file's arithmetic — excess is paid there or unpacked publicly
- Counters for Umrah-season flights to Jeddah and Madinah open three hours before departure at Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore — and Sialkot now runs direct AirSial Umrah flights to both cities, a quiet blessing for Punjab's north
- Collect the boarding pass and check its three facts: gate, seat, boarding time
FIA immigration: the questions before the questions
The Federal Investigation Agency officer scans the passport, matches the face, and for Umrah visa holders asks little — the visa speaks. What stops Pakistani travellers happens off to the side, and it is worth naming:
- Exit Control List entries — court cases, tax litigation and certain investigations can block departure entirely; a family member with any pending matter should resolve or document it weeks before, not at the counter
- Document mismatch — a name transliteration that differs between passport and visa, the trap the name-rules file exists to fix in advance
- The unprepared visit-visa traveller — Umrah visa holders with return tickets and hotel bookings rarely draw a second question; carry both anyway
The currency counter, in plain numbers
The State Bank's rule is not a rumour: adults may take out foreign currency up to USD 5,000 equivalent per visit, minors under eighteen USD 2,500, under annual ceilings of USD 30,000 and USD 15,000 — the full mechanics, cards and declaration duty sit in the currency rules file. The practical law: carry cards and a modest cash float, convert the rest in Makkah at the rates the money guide maps.
Porters, trolleys, trays
- Fix the porter's fee before the bag moves — the posted rates are the real ones; generosity after service, not negotiation before it
- Wrapping counters shrink-wrap checked bags for a small fee — worth it for families with soft-side suitcases
- Security trays: power bank visible in carry-on (never checked), liquids under 100 ml, the belt and watch off — the sequence rehearsed in the first-flight file for first-time flyers
- Every major Pakistani airport keeps a prayer area landside and airside — pray two rakats of travel before the gate, the sunnah's own departure lounge
The gate and the sky
Screens change gates; trust the screen over the boarding pass after the first check. Boarding closes 45–60 minutes before departure — the announcements move between Urdu and English, and the last call is genuinely the last. Then the jet bridge, the seat, and Pakistan shrinking beneath the wing while the family opens the first 24 hours file for what waits at the other end.
We queue at FIA counters with our papers in order while Gaza's families queue at sealed crossings Israel refuses to open for the living or the wounded — Ya Allah, let every gate held shut by force swing open. And Sudan's travellers learn departure as flight itself — borders crossed on foot, papers they may never use again folded against their chests — Ya Allah, make their next border crossing a homecoming.
A departure-day file with your family's flight, airport and timing written into it is what a proper pre-trip brief gives you — before the taxi leaves home. We actually respond, twenty-four hours, no hidden charges, and our clients walk our airports like men who have read the building's plan. HTG Travels — WhatsApp +92 317 5054959.
