How to Perform Umrah the First Time 2026–2027: Tawaf, Sa'i and Halq, Walked Through Step by Step
The flight lands, the ihram sheets go on, and the first thing most first-timers quietly ask their group leader: ab aage kya karna hai? The rites themselves are simple — four movements, under three unhurried hours — and everything around them is what takes a year to learn.
The quick answer: Umrah is four steps in one unbroken order — ihram with intention at the miqat, tawaf (seven anti-clockwise circuits of the Kaaba beginning and ending at the Black Stone), two rakats near Maqam Ibrahim with a drink of Zamzam, then sa'i — seven laps between Safa and Marwa — finished with halq or taqsir, the haircut that ends ihram. In 2026–2027 every tawaf and sa'i runs on a free Nusuk permit with a fixed time slot — book it early, keep the QR offline. The ihram rules file covers what ihram forbids; this guide walks the rites themselves.
Step one: ihram at the right place, not the hotel mirror
Ihram begins at the miqat, not whenever you feel ready — enter it before the line is crossed. From Pakistan that means ihram before descent into Jeddah, announced by the crew, or at Dhul Hulayfah if you start from Madinah. Make the intention, recite the talbiyah, and ihram's prohibitions apply from that moment — the full list sits in the miqat and prohibitions guide.
Step two: tawaf, circuit by circuit
- Find the green light. On the mosque wall, a green light line marks the level of the Black Stone below. Stand there, face the Kaaba, make your intention, and begin.
- Seven full circuits, anti-clockwise, each ending back at the green line. Kiss, touch or salute the Stone if you reach it — from a distance, a raised hand and a Bismillah counts completely.
- Two rakats after the seventh, near Maqam Ibrahim if the crowd allows, anywhere in the Haram if it does not.
- Drink Zamzam, make dua, and the tawaf is complete.
Night is the honest time for a first tawaf — after Isha the crush thins, and the best-time guide explains why Makkah's heat makes daytime circuits a health decision. The upper floors stay open to wheelchair users and slower pilgrims — the seniors guide lists the free Haram services.
Step three: sa'i — the seven laps that remember a mother
From the Masjid's Safa side, walk seven laps between the two hills, Safa to Marwa counting as one, finishing at Marwa — near three kilometres in total. The green-lit markers between them are where men traditionally quicken their pace only; women walk normally throughout. Water stations, shaded escalators and the wheelchair lane run the whole corridor.
Step four: halq, the quiet ending
Men shave the head (halq) or trim all of it equally (taqsir) — the shave is preferred; women cut a fingertip's length from each strand of their hair. The moment the hair is cut, ihram ends: ordinary clothes return, and Umrah is done.
Umrah chaar mauqoat ki nahi, chaar kadamon ki cheez hai — niyyat, tawaf, sa'i, aur halq — bas har kadam apni jagah hona chahiye.
The mistakes that actually cost people
- Tawaf started a corner early — the green light exists for a reason
- Six circuits walked in a crowded daze and never recounted
- Sa'i counted from Marwa, or as fourteen laps because both hills were counted
- Ihram violations left unpaid — the fidyah menu is cheaper than guilt
- Walking to the Mataf without the Nusuk permit
- Group members with no fixed meeting point inside the world's largest mosque
Families should add the children's guide; women without a mahram need the group rules file.
The small bag checklist
- Passport, visa printout, Nusuk permit QR saved offline and on paper
- Ihram belt and pouch; slippers in a bag, not a hand
- Water bottle, painkillers, oral rehydration salts
- Power bank, phone charged, the group leader's number on paper
- An agreed indoor meeting point, chosen before anyone needs it
A body walked six kilometres a day needs protecting as much as guiding — the staying-well health file covers the water, food, heat and blister discipline that keeps these steps painless.
A tawaf ends where it began — at the same corner, on purpose, seven times over. Hold Gaza in that seventh circuit: a people marched from one end of their own strip to the other on evacuation orders Israel writes and never intends to undo, their whole year spent moving away from home. Ya Allah, write their return the way You wrote the rites — fixed, certain, ending at the exact corner it was taken from. And let the sa'i carry Sudan's mothers — sa'i exists because one woman's desperate searching for her child was made a rite of worship; Sudan's mothers search too, through camps and cities, for flour, for safety, for children the war scattered. Ya Allah, honour their search the way You honoured Hajar's — seen, remembered, and answered with a way home.
Most first-Umrah mistakes are made a week before departure, in the gap between a plan on WhatsApp and a plan in writing: permit slots aligned to the flight, hotel distance chosen in footsteps, the tawaf walked on paper first. We actually respond — twenty-four hours, no hidden charges, no silence after the advance — and our clients travel with written guides built for their exact dates, not a photocopied brochure.
