The number on your matric or inter result card does not match the paper you remember writing — not by a little, by a landslide. Before you decide the examiner hated you, know this: you have 15 days, and there is a defined, legal process built for exactly this suspicion.
The quick answer: file for re-totaling online within 15 days of the result — Rs 1,000 to 1,500 per subject at most boards, refunded by most boards if your marks increase. FBISE and AKUEB students get something stronger: paper re-seeing, where you view the answer sheet with a parent and errors get fixed on the spot.
Re-totaling: arithmetic, not judgement
Rechecking — the boards call it re-totaling — is arithmetic, not judgement. A clerk re-adds your awarded marks, confirms every question was marked, and confirms no page was skipped.
What no board does is re-evaluate: nobody re-reads your answer to decide it deserved four more marks. The examiner's opinion stands; only the addition is on trial.
Typical corrections, when they come, sit in the plus-five to plus-fifteen range — an un-marked question, a column mis-summed. And if your marks increase, most boards refund the fee.
The window, the fees, the steps
Apply online through your board's portal within 15 days of the result. Attach the result card copy, select the subjects, pay, and keep the receipt — the outcome reaches you by post or portal within a few weeks.

When it is worth the money
Be honest about the expectation gap. If you genuinely expected the 80s and the card says below 60, that is a red flag for an arithmetic error or a paper-mixing mistake — file immediately.
If you expected 78 and got 72, the fee is buying lottery-level odds, because re-totaling mostly confirms the original number. The sobering truth every teacher knows: the overwhelming majority of re-checks change nothing.
That is not a reason to skip a genuine red flag; it is a reason to know which one you are holding.
Re-seeing: the right most families never hear about
FBISE and AKUEB offer something stronger. In paper re-seeing, the student — with a parent — physically views the answer sheet in front of a board officer, on a date typically scheduled three to four weeks after the result.
You can point at an un-marked answer, a half-marked question, a totalling slip — and anything found is corrected on the spot. Provincial BISEs do not offer re-seeing, which is precisely why federal-board students should use theirs.
Pro tip: Do not burn your 15-day re-check window on a name spelling or a CNIC digit — clerical corrections run on their own 30-day counter at around Rs 500 and usually resolve within a week or two.
